Can Contraceptive Pills Be Taken In Mid Fifties?

My daughter is 52 and a smoker. Her doctor has put her back of birth control pills in order to slow down bleeding during her period. I have always thought when a person reaches her age she should not take the birth control pills. Is she putting herself in danger of a blood clot?
