Can Depo Needle Cause Spotting?

I got the depo needle for the first time on 31st dec, over 8 days ago I noticed light spotting, it's a little heavier now but not a normal period. Is this normal to bleed so light and for so long? How long will it be before it stops? It's also itchy and sore now, which may be due to pads but it is uncomfortable.
