Can Elevated Sugar Level Cause Swelling In Lips?

Can elevated sugar cause an allergic reaction or cause your lips to swell? I have had 3 incidents of swelling of my lips and even the corner of my eye and wondered if it could have anything to do with elevated sugar in my system. I am not diabetic but it runs in my family. I have also had a nasty virus (coughing, stuffy nose, etc) each time that I had the swelling.
