Can Muscle Function Loss Due To Polio Be Regained?

I have had polio at the age of 2 and lost my muscles on the right leg, the thigh muscles were affected. Luckily all other parts of the limb and legs were saved. I have been able to walk normal without being noticed by many to have this problem, however, I have had a weak leg altogether. The thigh muscles were totally lost. I find it difficult to lift the leg like when driving I cannot withdraw my leg from the accelerator and apply on the brakes, I can twist the leg from the resting position and apply brakes.
My question is: Can exercise rebuild the thigh muscles? If so what type of exercise would you recommend?
