Can Soft Food Be Given After Banding Of Esophageal Varices?

My husband had his varices banded yesterday and has been on a clear liquid diet since. He is having some pain when swallowing but is very hungry. Can he eat soft foods??? Can he take anything for the pain or for the headache he has from either the anesthia (?) or from not eating??
