Can Ultrasound Determine The Reason For Thyroid Nodule?

Was just told that I have a 2.4 cm thyroid nodule and that I should have an ultrasound. It was discovered during a cervical MRI. Is this something that I can feel in my throat? And, will the ultrasound determine the exact reason for the nodule? Also, I have been unable to lose weight.
