Can We Reattach Pulled Out Nail?

I shut my finger in the door last week nad ripped my nail almost copletely off, even beyond the cutical. The doctor put it back in and stiched it in place with one stitch. went back after three days and he says everything looks great and almost sure it will reattach, but everything i read says that can't happen
