Could Brown Spots Under The Toe Nail Be The Symptom Of Fungal Infection?

Hi, I have noticed I have 2 brown spots under my big toenail. I have in the past been diagnosed with common toenail fungus that went away with treatment, however there were never brown spots during this time, only a yellowing towards the top of the nails. Could this be a fungus or a sign of something else?
