Could Development Of Red Ears Be Due To Food Allergy?

9 year old Golden Retriever that developed red ears. No infection. Dr. treating with steriod and ointment and am cleaning the ears. When treatment stopped for 4 days ears are better. No other symptoms. Can this be a food allergy? Am changing diet to see but how long would it take to show if this is the problem.
