Could Pelvic Area Pain Be An STD?

My wife had to go the the ER for severe pain in pelvic area. They think it was PID. They are checking her for STDs but the results are not back yet. I have read that you can get PID without having a STD and she is prone do BV. What are the chances of it being an STD?
