Could Severe Pain In Groin Be Due To Damaged Ligament?

I damaged my groin in 2006 lifting my Mother who had Alzheimer s I think I damaged a ligament. I have had trouble on and off during the years and still get pain sometimes it gets very uncomfortable I have pain when walking feels like it is giving way and when I rest i can hardly walk until I get it moving again. Have tried taking ibuprofen when it gets really bad which helps a bit. I am not overweight and eat healthy. Can a damaged ligament go on this amount of time or should I see my GP. Thank you
