Could The Delayed Periods With Spotting Be Due To Missed Contraceptive Pills?

So I have been on BC for the past 3 years (since I was 17) and am now 20. I skipped 3 of my pills in a row this month. I am now 2 days late but had spotting today that was bright red. Also the day I was suppost to start i had really bad cramping but nothing came. Now im having smaller craps throughout the day and if feels like my period is going to come but it never does. I havent had any symptoms of being pregnant but I have had the symptoms I always get before I start but I never started. I have also been pretty stressed this month. I was wondering if it was possible that since Ive been on birth control for so long it would help my chances of not getting pregnant or if missing the 3 pills has just thrown off my period to where Im only going to spot?
