Could Weakness, Deep Cough And Shaking In Legs Be Due To Lamotrigine?

Thank you. Yes, I ve had epilepsy all my life ... I m now 55 years old ... I ve been on tegretal for the last 30 or so years ... just found out it eats away at my bones so my new neurologist (I m now in Easley, SC but have been in southern Mexico) decided to put me on lamotrigine. He started me at 50mg and the plan was to work me up to 500mg and THEN to start weaning me off of tegretal. However, when I got to 300mg or 350mg, I suddenly felt drunk (doctor s words ... I haven t a clue what being drunk feels like!) ... when that happend, I got VERY weak & tired ... was in bed 23 out of 24 hrs and sleeping for most of the time. I also started this deep cough (flu-like symptoms?) ... I am just now off of tegretal (finally!) and am starting to build up my energy but am still very weak ... if I am on my feet for 10 - 20 min, I get so very shaky. I told my neurologist at least 3 times how I believed the cough to be related to the lamotrigine but he insists that it is just coincidental. I also looked up information on MedlinePlus Drug Information and read that I m to call my doctor immediately if I have extreme tiredness, lack of energy, loss of appetite (I m 5 ft 5 1/2 inches tall and weigh 100 lbs), flu-like symptoms, weakness, muscle weakness (there are other listed symptoms but these are just the ones that are effecting me). Why won t my doctor believe me about the flu-like symptoms (should I change doctors?) and what can / should I do about the cough as well as all the other symptoms? Please help me! Thank you so much. Heidi
