Does Gymnema Sylvestre Help In Bringing Down Blood Sugar Levels?

My blood sugar level is at 6 (6.4 is diabetes). I have been taking Gymnema Sylvestre at dinner time to help lower sugar level. Will this supplement be OK with the medications I am taking, and will it help to lower blood sugar? Metformin makes me very sick and I cannot take it.
