Does A Broken Toe Nail Take 6 Months To Regrow?

I lost my middle toenail today it had been yellow, don't know why maybe you do??? It cracked in half and feel off. I can't tell if there is a new bed growing. I understand this may take 6 months to grow is that correct? Can I put a fake nail on it?
