Does A Painful Exostosis Above The Knee Need Surgery?

I have a 14 year old son with exostosis above his right knee very close to the knee cap. He plays basketball and reports pain eveytime after playing. The orthopedist said surgery isn t necessary unless he is in pain. Should we consider removal early or wait it out?
