Does Extended Release Really Just Mean An Extended Half-life Because

Does extended release really just mean an extended half-life because there is a larger dosage? Extended release Tylenol prescribes taking 2 650 mg pills to last 8 hours. That worked for me, but I hate to take so much. I tried one tablet and woke up in 4 hours with pain.
