Every Few Days I Wake Up With My Eyes Stuck

Every few days I wake up with my eyes stuck shut with eye discharge/mucus. The next few days my eyes are bloodshot and red (mainly in the corner of the eye) I went to the dr. and got medicated ointment. I've use it..but I feel like this is a different issue the ointment is not helping. What should I do?
