For About 2 Months, I Have Noticed That The Middle

For about 2 months, I have noticed that the middle toe of my right foot is swollen at the knuckle (looks like a club). For the past 3-4 days I have been exercising and now it is extremely sore to the touch. What is wrong? My maternal grandfather had gout; did he pass it on to me?
