Hell My Name Is William 22 (23 In A Month)

Hell my name is William 22 (23 in a month) and I am trying to understand how my vocal cords work to help with not straining my voice as much. I use to think my vocal cords were where my cricoid cartilage is, because that's what sticks out the farthest. So I guess my question is this normal???
