Hello Dr. Rynne,
I had shingles in my eye two years ago and I saw two ophthamologists then. I took 400 mg. of acyclovir five times a day for I think it was 20 days as 101 pills were used up by me. I also put ganciclovir ophthalmic gel. 0.15% for some days, about half the small tube was used up. Now two years later I had two bottle of 100 pills of acyclovir left (as the first ophthamologist had overprescribed the amount of pills I needed to buy then. i usually live in India. Right now I am visiting Hawaii (no health insurance, not even Part B of medicare. Age 70 female. All this to tell you that I have diagnosed myself having shingles in the same eye now, starting on the night of the 4th of November. I have been taking the 400 mg. pill every day till now, day 12 now. I have planned to take them till the bottle is finished which will be 99 pills (as one was absent in this second bottle from two years ago.) The bottle says good till August 2016.The half tube of gel i still had also (kept in the frig in India these two years in case it was needed!) I have been using it and trusting that it is still working. It's expiry date was only six months after I used it, so expiry date was 11/2014 which is certainly more risky to trust than the pills. So the half tube is now gone and I used it a drop on my finger five times a day for seven days (since 11/5) and now the last almost 5 days three times a day. A doctor friend said the usual dose was 800 mg. for 7 days but i trusted the instruction i was originally given of 400 mg. a day, partly because that's what is written on the bottle and also because I weigh 92 pounds and I know I am sensitive to drugs. So my question is Do I keep taking the 400 mg. acyclovir for the rest of the twenty days needed to finish the bottle (which I think I will do)? And the related question is that I hope it has been okay to do what I have already done with 'old' medicine. I didn't want to pay $175 here to see the doctor! Definitely the feeling of something in my eye disappeared after a short time just like it did two years ago. (I have been under stress both times: then my mother was dying and this time I had to come to the US to get my next visa to India where I enjoy living and also the presidential election....sending you much love and appreciation just for listening to all this.
