Hello,
I am 12w4d pregnant. My husband and I tried for 9 months to have a baby, and I finally am pregnant. I had my first ultrasound yesterday, where the tech said the heartbeat was at a normal rate and that the growth rate was normal. I got my pictures and was sent out to the waiting room to wait to be called by the nurse practioner for my blood work. She called me back and proceeded to ask about chromosomal disorders in my family, which nobody has any in my family or my husband's. My mother did miscarry at age 41 because her child was diagnosed in the womb at 12 weeks with trisomy 13.
So she shows me the u/s of the brain, where it appears that only half of the brain developed correctly. She told me I would go to see a specialist who has better equipment and can tell if it was only fluid obstructing the view of the other half of the brain (the ventricles, to be exact). To give you a visual idea, one side was the normal size, while the other was tiny, like a kidney bean. She insisted, however, that it could be fluid obstructing the view, but I am pretty sure it will be something worse.
My questions, have you ever seen an u/s of the brain that looks abnormal because fluid was blocking the view?
And if it is a disorder, which one commonly causes the brain not to completely develop? I do not think it would be anencephaly, as the skull looks fine.
Last, could this indicate a blockage of one of the lateral ventricles? Maybe the CSF isn't able to circulate through all ventricles and back to this one, causing it to be smaller in size.
All I could find were articles about enlarged ventricles, none about smaller ones.
I won't see a specialist until next week. which is killing me. Google has been my best friend since yesterday, and I need some help.
Thank you
