Hello,
I've had a persistent and re-occurring wisdom tooth infection over the past two months. When I first went to the dentist he prescribed me Metronidazole 400mg 3 times a day, for five days. However, on the fourth day the symptoms were not improving so I went to an emergency dentist who prescribed me amoxicillin (I've forgotten the dosage) for seven days. That seemed to clear things up, but two weeks later it came back. However, because of family illness I wasn't able to get to my dentist until about two and a half weeks later - who then prescribed me Metronidazole 400mg again (even though I told him it didn't work last time). By that point the tooth infection also spread to my left lower wisdom tooth. Because I've continued to have pain in my lower right wisdom tooth, and it's sore to open my jaw on the right side, I was not convinced the infection has gone. So I then went back to another dentist today who said she wasn't sure if there was an infection, but because of the pain she prescribed me more Metronidazole 400mg. I just want to point out as well, ever since the fist infection I've been getting yellow gunk covering my tongue - even when I thought the infection was gone. I can still barely see my lower right wisdom tooth, which also made me think the infection was still there (the gum is light pink and has two lumps on it). My tonsils have also been raised/swollen for the last two months (I was thinking was because of the tooth infection).
However, just a few hours after visiting the dentist my left tonsil has become quite sore (moving my tongue, swollowing and opening my jaw hurts it). I've just looked in the mirror and seen that it's red and has white spots on it. However, on top of the biggest white spot it looks as if there's green mould growing on it. My throat is also now very dry, and drinking water doesn't seem to help.
So my questions are:
1) Could this be tonsillitis?
2) Could this have spread from my tooth?
3) I was thinking of leaving it a few days to see how it progresses, but because of all the teeth and tongue stuff would you recommend just going to see a GP tomorrow?
4)Or will the antibiotics I'm already on help if it is bacterial tonsillitis? And I could just wait it out.
