Hello, This Question Is For My Boss. She Came Up

Hello, this question is for my boss. She came up to me this afternoon and she showed me the inside of her hand. On the finger she has what looks like a "swollen" vein. It looks almost bruised and she said she had a sharp pain, needle like prick, before she noticed the "swollen" vein. She then told me that it hurts when she touches it. Any idea of what it could be and is it serious?
