Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Hi - I am a naturopath in New Zealand and an elderly client of mine recently had a knee operation and they gave her warfarin after the operation. Previous to the operation she spasmodically took some natural health supplements, and some of the ingredients in some of the products contained 100mg dried licorice root (I know this can be hypertensive ) and a circulation product with 75 mg CoQ10 and an Olive produc t with some dried garlic and celery, plus L-Taurine for the Liver. Of course she was not taking these during the 2-3 weeks in hospital and began taking some of these when she got home. Now the pharmacist is saying that she could have been off warfarin earlier if she had not taken the natural supplements., They say that the L-Taurine "may reduce systolic and diastolic blood pressure and 'may' have diuretic properties". Her warfinar blood tests are good - kidney function & hemoglobin is fine. Of course I have told her to take the pharmacist's advice and to discontinue taking the products - which she still only took randomly. I realise that all natural supplements needs to be taken with caution and to be aware of contraindications with drugs - but the main question is - that do the ingredients at the dosage I have given above, have enough therapeutic strength and action to delay her coming off warfarin? Thank you - Helen
