Hi- my daughter (age 39) has been prescribed phenteramine and topiramate for weight loss. She has bipolar disorder and takes citalopram, apiprazole, gabapentin, and omeprazole daily with clonazepam prn. She started the phen-topimax on 11/23. Within the past 48 hours, she has been sleeping excessively, slurred speech, confusion about date, time (e.g., she woke up at 4 am and wondered why her son was home from school so early, as she thought it was 4 pm the day before- during which she slept most of the day, and tonight, prewashed and loaded the dishwasher, I started it and she asked if the dishes had been washed - she was there when I asked her about the soap pod placement. She opened the dishwasher and said 'they're warm... ' - with no recall of hearing the dishwasher run although she was up and around the kitchen during the whole cycle). Bottom line - she is not herself, her voice is child-like and she does not realize that she is 'different' than usual. I believe it is the topiramate... I took it at one point in the past and needed to stop as I was unable to function or think clearly- I called it 'dopemax'... it made me non-functional. Please provide your opinion.. My plan is to have her (or I) will contact the doc that prescribed the phen-topimax med and ask them to change it back to phen only - which she started on and did fine with- just not enough weight loss fast enough to please her or the MD who changed the script to add the topimax. Thanks in advance
