Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Hi I am a 65 year old woman & I have been having a problem with what I think is an R.S.I. for about two years. It seems to occur after I have been lifting heavy items. Not Immediately after. It could be a day after.
What happens is that I have a feeling in my hands that I can't hold anything. If I was holding a cup or something I would immediately drop it. At the same time my heart beats very fast. Then I notice an unpleasant feeling in my arms. It is completely symmetrical. It travels up both arms & the across my chest. All of this may last for only a minute or it can go on for 5 minutes or more. I rub my arms vigorously & it seems to help it to go away. It is very unpleasant & of course scary although I would not describe it as a pain. I keep myself fit by doing Hatha Yoga every morning before breakfast & also I practice some Tai Chi. I spend about 20 minutes doing this. The other thing I do every morning when I come out of the shower is to run on the spot. I do 1100 runs barefoot. It's fun to do. I also love to walk & walk up quite steep hills from time to time. I give my self plenty of time to go up my hill. I don't rush. I have a large garden & I love to mow the lawn. It's hard work as it's on a slope. I do employ a man to do some of the heavy duty garden jobs. I live alone & do not earn very much. Also sometimes I need to bring in wood for the fire & it may not be convenient to ask someone to do it for me. I am an artist & spend quite a lot of time painting. I also work on little clay sculptures. I used to carve stone although sadly I rarely do this now as it triggers my R.S.I. I have been to see my doctor who couldn't help me at all. I did get the details from the practice about seeing a physiotherapist at my local hospital. He just said that if I didn't stop doing the heavy lifting triggers then the problem would never go away. In fact he said that it my get worse. Alternatively, if I do stop the heavy work I may never heal completely although I am unlikely to get any worse. Please give me some advice. Hilary bryanston
