Hi, I Got My Retainer Yesterday From The Dentist And

Hi, I got my retainer yesterday from the dentist and he told me to keep it in while I eat food. And it's way too hard to eat food with it in. I keep it in every part of the day even while I sleep. Would it be fine if I took it out while I eat and then as soon as I'm done I would put it back in?
