Hi I Have Had A Persistent Cough For Many Months

Hi I have had a persistent cough for many months and put it down to smoking. I got a virus early in Nov and my cough got worse. I have chest ache, bad tasting phlegm. I have had an X-ray done and the results are - prominent markings to upper left lung, I have to have a repeat X-ray in 2 weeks time. I am slightly concerned. Still having bad tasting phlegm and managed to check the colour of this yesterday and found it to be sandy coloured brown. What can this be? I am a 47 year old female, by the way I stopped smoking on New Year's Day
