Hi, I Was Prescribed The Pill A Few Days Ago

Hi, I was prescribed the pill a few days ago for contraception and to help ease my period pains. I was told that if i go away and want to delay my 'period' i can just continue taking the pill each day until i get back. However, if i star taking it now, i will have to delay my first 'period' whilst being on the pill. Is this okay to do or am i best waiting to start taking the pill so i don't have to delay my first one?
