Hi. My Father Is Complaining That When He Closes His

Hi. My father is complaining that when he closes his eyes or wakes up from sleep his eyelids are stuck to his eyeballs and he is unable to open his eyes unless he manually pulls the lids up. His eyes are starting to get irritated and sore. What can he do and is this serious?
