Hi, My Friend Has Intermittent Stabbing Pains That Attack Unpredictably

Hi, my friend has intermittent stabbing pains that attack unpredictably in different places - sometimes a foot, sometimes an eye, sometimes the back. He is diabetic, but thought these pains were different from diabetic neuropathy. Are there any other underlying causes for this typ of pain?
