How Can Thumbnail Skin Swelling With Thickness Be Treated?

I have a problem with the skin around my thumb nail. It is thick and looks swollen. It has been like this for a few months . It doesn't hurt, and I have been cutting that skin around the nail. It looks so ugly. What can I do to correct this problem so my nail can look normal again ?
