How Does The Contraceptive Pill Work?

Hi... I had sex this morning and me and my boyfriend are afraid the condom broke yet we were not entirely sure. The doctors wont be open until Monday..Is it still ok to get the Morning after pill then??
Also I would prefer go on the pill full time...Im just curious to how the pill actually works?
