How Much Walking Is Required After Having Hip Replacement?

My niece just had hip replacement surgery Thursday. It's now Sunday. How do we know if the swelling is too much ? And how much walking should she do ? Also how should it be elevated? The person that took her didn't remember any dr instructions and she was quite out of it from the pain meds. She was released the day after surgery from hospital. Thank you for any help. DW
