How Often Is Chronic Cough Associated With Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease?

I am experiencing possible acid reflux. I occasionally get a back up of what I think is acid in the back of my throat. I only feel it in the upper back of my throat. it then causes me to cough and usually a thicker mucous coats my throat shortly afterwards. It doe taste like a stomach bile like after throwing up but it does burn. It doesn t happen daily but if it happens it usually happen several times that day. Should I try an over the counter acid reliever or is this something that should be checked by a Dr? Amy,

Dear Amy,
Hi & Welcome to HCM.

I can understand your problem of acidity related symptoms.

Invariably whenever you get an acid reflux, the symptoms aggravate.

After having gone through the symptoms described in your query, I am of the opinion that you have the features suggestive of acid reflux (gastro esophageal reflux disease) responsible for the sore throat and chronic cough.

However I would advise you to consult a physician to rule out other causes of chronic cough like any chest infection, allergy or bronchial asthma.

Meanwhile you may take a proton pump inhibitor like Pantoprazole along with Domperidone once daily one hour before breakfast for at least 4 weeks.

Avoid alcohol (if you consume), fatty vegetarian and non-vegetarian fast and junk foods, smoking, coffee, hot and spicy foods, etc.

Go to bed after 2-3 hours of having a meal, raise the head end of your bed by 45 degree, take yoghurt or a glass of milk in the dinner, etc.

Hope to have answered your query.
