How Should Temper Tantrums In Children Be Handled?

Would it ever make sense for a parent to present an 8 year old having a temper tantrum (not autistic) with a newly purchased stuffed animal to calm him? I would want this question answered by a psychiatrist familiar with pediatric issues, not a general practitioner.
