I had a bout of the flu several weeks ago. I started to feel better, but then got worse again, with ear pain, sore throat, lots of drainage and headaches. I went to the clinic and was told there was fluid behind my left ear drum and my throat was swollen and I most likely had an upper respiratory infection with what was left over after the flu. I was given a seven day course of amoxicillin and told to take Mucinex. My ear and throat pain kept getting worse instead of better. The nasal discharge was better and what remained was clear. I went back to the clinic and she could tell by looking that my neck was definitely swollen on the left side and my ear still had lots of fluid in it. She gave me a course of steroids to help reduce the swelling and told me to take an antihistamine instead of the Mucinex. I ve finished the steroids and have been taking an antihistamine every day, but the left ear and left side of my throat still hurt. Is this just a virus or allergy that will eventually get better or should I go back to the clinic again? What could this be? I m also very physically exhausted. I m sick and tired of being sick and tired. Is there something that I can do at home to help this? I ve tried warm oil in the ear, throat lozenges, tylenol and ibu profen don t help the pain at all. Any advice would be appreciated.
