How To Deal With Pain And Discomfort On Tampon Usage?

I tried a tampon for the first time a few months ago. After putting it in it didn't really hurt but I could definitely feel it. Since I could feel it I decided to take it out after 2 hours or so. It was a little hard to get out and extremely painful. Not sure if this happened because it wasn't if long enough but I couldn't leave it any longer because I was getting ready to leave and it was uncomfortable. So since then I've been nervous to try again. Also when I was little I had a straddle injury and fell over the edge of the pool and hit that area and there was blood so not sure if I should be concerned with that.
