How To Identify Labor Pains?

Hello. I'm 39 weeks and 6 days. I'm confused what to expect when water breaks what colour etc. I spoke to my midwife and told her is abit brown and 2tsp wetness, does that mean my water is broken? Also I've been having contraction pains but not as much.. thanks
