How To Treat Exercise Induced Asthma?

A friends daughter is 17 years old, is very athletic and recently is having trouble breathing during her basketball games. She runs hard and then suddenly can not catch her breath. She was evaluated by NP on Friday and they said it could be athletic induced asthma. She has been playing sports since she was in 4 th grade with no problems so I have a hard time believing it is that. Could this shortness of breath be heart related?
