How To Treat Flipped Nail From Cuticle Caused Due To An Injury?

On Friday night, my husband was using a drill which slipped. His right pointer fingernail flipped completely up from the cuticle side, as well as the cuticle. It is only held on by a piece of meat. We keep wrapping with gauze and using an ointment. What should we expect? We are truck drivers and it happened at a rest area, so he didn't wanna get it checked out. I thought different. Thank you!
