How To Treat Pain,bruise And Discolouration Of Fingers?

My finger suddenly for no reason looked black last week from bruising. It was very painful. I had not done anything to make this happen. It was better after a few days. Suddenly yesterday the tip was black again and was again very painful and was very cold to touch. Tonight it looks fine but it still hurts. What is causing this.
