How To Treat Persistent Cough?

I was diganosed with adult croup on the 20th of this month. My coughing is really starting to bother me and my chest hurts. I am still on my antibiotics since I have reactions I can't take them as prescribed. Any advice? Should I try a different cough medicane. My chest and throat are so raw. Thank you.
