How To Treat Scratch Caused By Dog ?

My dog and son were playing and he got scratched around (like above and below) his eye. I kept asking him how many fingers I had up and he could tell me so I don't this he got the eye ball it's self but keeps complaining that his eye hurts. I don't know if it's the actual eye or not though and don't have insurance to take him to the doctor at the drop of a hat. What should I watch for? I have him keeping a cool damp cloth on it now.
