How To Treat Severe Cramps In Thighs?

my husband had an extremely painful episode of leg cramps in his upper thighs last night that left him screaming and writhing in pain to the point that he felt he would pass out. He has had them often, but this was the worst one. What can be done in the midst of this cramp to relieve his pain?
