How To Treat Soreness And Swelling Of Shin Bone ?

Hi I fell yesterday and landed with my shin bone just below the knee on the edge of a stone step. Cut and some grazing, sore but not serious, but quite a bit of swelling which is still there. Should I just rest it for a while? How long should I expect swelling to be there? 66yrs old
