How To Treat Swelling And Bruise Of Finger Caused Due To A Fracture?

My son was diagnosed with a fractured right thumb today.The knuckle is slightly swollen and has a dark bluish tint. He is in no pain. The bone is chipped and his doctor said that surgery was his only alternative. I am getting my information from my wife who apparently did not pay attention very well.My question is is this really necessary? Or what other options exist.
