How To Wear A Splint Back On Swollen Finger?

I have been wearing a splint on my finger for 9 weeks due to mallet finger. The Doctor said it was time for me to take it off during my time at home and replace it when I m at work. once I removed it it has swollen and will not go back in the splint. is this normal?
