I Am 28 Years Old, Was A Heavy Smoker And

I am 28 years old, was a heavy smoker and I recently had pneumothorax on my left lung. Required a chest tube and surgery to attach my lung to my rib cage. I had started smoking soon after I got out of the hospital for about a month after surgery. At that point I realized that I could be doing serious damage to the healing process. I was having problems breathing for the whole month that I was smoking due to what I think was inflammation of my lungs from the smoke. I have quit smoking now and I am starting to be able to breath better. My question is: Could i have done serious damage to the healing process and will I be able to heal as I should have had I not started smoking again.
